Interview Prep for Your Manufacturing Career

Admittedly, most manufacturing professionals would not consider themselves proficient at the art of the interview. With so many changes in the current job climate it is important to communicate your skills and abilities to potential employers. Most companies are looking for highly skilled employees so it is your job to convince them you’re the candidate. Here are some things you should consider before you next interview that can give you an advantage over the competition.

  • Be prepared for technical questions. Your experience is very specific, so it stands to reason that the interview will also focus on these aspects. Depending on your previous experience you may be asked about electrical circuits, mechanical assembly, or even heat exchangers. Position yourself as a subject matter expert and share real life experiences about how your skills have benefited your past employers.
  • What would you do if…? Companies want to know how you would react in certain situations and behavioral interviews are designed draw these answers from you. They may ask how you handle working with a difficult co-worker or what happens when the project priorities change quickly. You want the interviewer to understand how you work under pressure. Provide thorough answers using examples from your career.
  • Where do you see your career in 10 years? Many employers ask this question but it is possible that few even understand what they want to hear as an answer. Be prepared to answer this but be genuine. What they really want to hear is if you plan to be part of their team for the next 5 to 10 years. Talk about how you would like to grow within their company. They like to see candidates with a willingness to learn and take on new projects and responsibilities.
  • Why do you want to work for our company? Before you step foot through the door be sure to research the company. Businesses don’t want to hear candidates say that they are simply looking for any job; they want to know you are dedicated to their company and that you match their corporate culture. Learn about the company values and talk about how they match your own.
