Ways to Train Your Manufacturing Workforce

Training your workforce to understand your specific requirements and procedures is a necessary part of doing business, but that doesn’t mean it needs to be boring. Most people learn better with a more hands-on approach to education rather than a classroom setting. Here are some fun ways to train your manufacturing employees.

  1. Visual cues. Many individuals learn better through illustrations than either reading or lecturing, so consider designing graphics that describe the most important aspects of the job. You may choose to create infographic style training manuals and even place posters around the facility to reinforce the lessons. Your team may be interested in continued training if they are looking forward to the next issue of the corporate infographic.
  2. Give and take. Interaction is a key part of learning for many people. You or your trainer should provide opportunities for your team to participate in the training themselves. If they do not there is no way to know if they are honestly paying attention. Ask questions about the material just covered while still in the training session. Split the group into smaller teams to work on individual projects. You can even make this portion competitive. Let them know there will be a quiz or a test at the end of the training session.
  3. Fun and Games. One old technology that is being used in a creative new way is video games for training. A lot of employees will relate to video gaming since generations X and Y grew up playing with them. There are companies developing tools that can be used in the manufacturing environment that can teach employees how to do the job while they are playing a simulation. If you’re not in a position to invest in the gaming technology, you can always devise more traditional games to keep everyone interested in the subject matter.
  4. Role playing. Sometimes this portion of the training process can be groan-worthy but it doesn’t have to be. It is time to take back role playing and make it fun for everyone on the team. Have an individual or a group act out a scenario that the rest of the team can critique and correct. Make it fun and give award for best dramatic performance or most memorable lines.
